The U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory addressing social media and youth mental health in May 2023. With the near universal use of social media among youth ages 13 – 17, the Advisory looks at the impact of social media on the mental health of our young people, both positive and negative. Adolescents report social media connects them with people who can help them through tough times and provides connections to what is going on in their friends’ lives. Some adolescents also report they feel “addicted” to social media, and it can make them feel worse about their lives.
Additionally, research conducted by the University of Michigan indicates that children as young as age 7 are involved in social media. Current trends and impact of usage on the overall health of youth will be examined during this workshop, along with resources and strategies to assist youth in creating safer and healthier habits in social media use.
