Social media and youth are often seen as synonymous, but that media use can negatively impact many aspects of their lives. Some of the side effects are decreased or poor academic performance, deterioration in peer and family relationships, behavioral problems, physical health issues, developmental delays and difficulty with psychosocial adjustments. In a nationally representative survey of 18 to 27-year-olds, about half (47%) shared they wished TikTok and X did not exist. Sixty percent of those same individuals also said social media has a negative impact on society. In another project looking at the lives of the “smartphone generation,” nearly all teens who were interviewed reported they would rather be in their parent’s generation, without smartphones. This workshop will:

  • Look at the algorithm pressures on youth and the links to mental health struggles and issues
  • Discuss online risks, such as harassment, cyberbullying and sexual solicitation
  • Examine social media design and addition
  • Review resources and strategies to engage with youth in discussions and lessons
