The pursuit of perfection via Instagram has profoundly impacted our online and real world lives, particularly for our youth. Its visual nature places a premium on appearance – often a highly curated, perfectly filtered one. Teens compare themselves to those filtered images of their peers and celebrities, seeking an unattainable level of perfection. The cost of that perfection can be negative feelings about appearance and body satisfaction, low self-esteem, increased risk for eating disorders, depression and other mental health issues. Instagram’s own internal researchers reported that involvement in the app led to a “teen mental health deep dive,” worsening body image issues for 1 out of 3 teen girls. This workshop will:

  • Look at how Instagram and social media has influenced how youth socialize
  • Examine social comparison in social media and the impact on mental health
  • Discuss strategies and review resources for healthy engagement with Instagram and social media
