Extensive evidence confirms that high social media use has a significant impact on the mental health of our youth. Children and teens who spend more than three hours daily on social media platforms face double the risk of experiencing severe symptoms of anxiety and depression, often exacerbated by unrealistic beauty or lifestyle standards, sleep disruptions and an overwhelming fear of missing out. Meta, TikTok, Snap Inc. and YouTube recently settled a social media addiction case with a Kentucky school district, and other lawsuits are pending.
This workshop explores how the digital diet of youth shapes their emotional, social and cognitive well-being. The psychological impact of comparison culture, constant connection, cyberbullying and harassment will be examined. Resources and strategies to support youth in developing resilience, digital wellness and healthier online behaviors.
