In a time where youth are more digitally connected than ever before, rates of loneliness, social isolation and challenges with building meaningful relationships continue to rise. The digital connections that youth make via social media and online platforms are meaningful and important, but they also contribute to social isolation and loneliness. Youth can be left feeling sad, misunderstood, suffering from FOMO and without anyone to talk to. The impact of loneliness on mental health can last for years.
This workshop will:
- Examine the social and emotional impacts of digital communication on youth and their relationships
- Look at the relationship between social media, screen time and youth mental health
- Review the research addressing the causes and consequences of youth loneliness and its impact on well-being
- Discuss how to guide youth in balancing their online world with real-world relationships
- Review strategies and resources in the social-emotional development and healthy peer relationships among youth
