DESCRIPTION:In today’s connected world\, the digital environment is a central part of youth identity\, relationships and daily life. Social media\, gaming and online communities can foster creativity and connection – but they can also lead to stress\, anxiety\, isolation and self-comparison. Their digital environment can have a profound influence on the developing mind and mental health of young people. During the workshop\, we will examine current research on the psychological and relational impacts of the digital engagement\, discuss emerging trends in online behavior and review strategies and resources to better support youth navigating the pressures and possibilities of the online world.

DESCRIPTION:Adults spend an average of three to four hours per day on their screens\, while youth spend an average of seven. Children are getting smartphones earlier than ever – 53% of kids have their one by age 11\, and by age 12\, 71% do. While devices themselves are not addictive\, the social connections they give us are powerfully compelling. Smartphones provide us the ability to maintain those connections 24/7\, but at a cost. This workshop will: \n\nLook at the social media trends among youth\nExamine the underlying science of smartphones\, social media and the brain\nReview the current research addressing media diet\nDiscuss the impact of social media and media diet on youth health\nLook at strategies for helping youth navigate the digital life

SUMMARY:Disconnected: Youth\, Loneliness and Relationships in a Digital World
DESCRIPTION:In a time where youth are more digitally connected than ever before\, rates of loneliness\, social isolation and challenges with building meaningful relationships continue to rise. The digital connections that youth make via social media and online platforms are meaningful and important\, but they also contribute to social isolation and loneliness. Youth can be left feeling sad\, misunderstood\, suffering from FOMO and without anyone to talk to. The impact of loneliness on mental health can last for years.   \nThis workshop will:  \n\nExamine the social and emotional impacts of digital communication on youth and their relationships \nLook at the relationship between social media\, screen time and youth mental health \nReview the research addressing the causes and consequences of youth loneliness and its impact on well-being \nDiscuss how to guide youth in balancing their online world with real-world relationships \nReview strategies and resources in the social-emotional development and healthy peer relationships among youth
