SUMMARY:Turning the Tide Against a Sea of Mean
DESCRIPTION:Both boys and girls engage in bullying\, and researchers continually examine the role of gender in bullying behavior. While gender can impact how students bully\, there are many other influences that impact the behavior of our youth. Kids are overwhelmed with negative and harmful influences that create the “sea of mean” many of them live in day after day. Adults both in and out of schools and agencies must work together to both intervene in and prevent the “sea of mean” that threatens to tear down any semblance of kindness and decency left among our youth’s culture. This workshop will examine:  \n\nThe latest research specific to gender and bullying \n\n\nCurrent cultural norms and influences that encourage bullying and harassment among youth \n\n\nThe most recent research on the development of empathy in youth and specific strategies to facilitate this development  \n\n\nHow to create climates of respect both in and out of school \n\n\nAppropriate and creative disciplinary measures that engender accountability for bullying behavior \n\n\nThe digital life of youth and how to cross the “digital divide” to encourage safe and healthy digital engagement \n\n\nStrategies and resources to address bullying and harassment.

SUMMARY:This is Your Brain on Social Media
DESCRIPTION:Adults spend an average of three to four hours per day on their screens\, while youth spend an average of seven. Children are getting smartphones earlier than ever  ̶  53% of kids have one by age 11\, and 71% by age 12. While devices themselves are not addictive\, the social connections they give us are powerfully compelling. Smartphones provide us the ability to maintain those connections 24/7\, but at a cost. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at the social media trends among youth \n\n\nExamine the underlying science of smartphones\, social media and the brain \n\n\nReview the current research addressing media diet \n\n\nDiscuss the impact of social media and media diet on youth health \n\n\nLook at strategies for helping youth navigate the digital life.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Cycle of Bullying and Trauma
DESCRIPTION:The Centers for Disease Control cited bullying as a widespread public health issue\, and in many instances\, shares a relationship with trauma\, albeit a complex one. Being bullied can significantly impact the physical\, emotional\, social\, academic and behavioral well-being of children and teens. Those who have been exposed to trauma and violence may be more likely to be bullied and engage in bullying against others. Bullying and cyberbullying and the toxic stress involved with those behaviors create obstacles to learning and have long-term mental health outcomes for both targets and aggressors\, well into their adult years. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at the characteristics of bullying and the relationship between bullying and trauma \n\n\nExamine the shared risk and protective factors between bullying and trauma \n\n\nAddress trauma-informed responses and strategies for addressing bullying.

SUMMARY:Youth Mental Health: Addressing the Challenges Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Half of all mental health issues surface by age 14\, but many of those issues go unrecognized and untreated. In recent years\, there has been a significant increase in the number of children and adolescents experiencing major depressive episodes and anxiety\, mood\, attention and behavior disorders. One in five of our youth experience mental illness\, while nearly one in three adolescents will meet the criteria for an anxiety disorder by the age of 18. By mid-adolescence\, girls are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mood disorder as boys. The effect of this is more than numbers and statistics  ̶  it is the impact on children\, adolescents and their families. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at the facts about mental health among children and adolescents \n\n\nReview the current research addressing depression\, anxiety\, mood\, attention and behavior disorders among children and youth \n\n\nDiscuss the impact of technology on mental health \n\n\nExamine the risks and protective factors impacting youth mental health \n\n\nLook at strategies and resources to help improve adolescents’ mental health.
