SUMMARY:Scrolling Under Stress: Social Media\, Cyberbullying and Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Our children and teens move through a digital landscape that is constantly changing while shaping their emotional\, social and behavioral health. The Pew Research Center found that nearly half of U.S. teens report being online “almost constantly.” While most teens say they feel more connected to their friends through social media\, that constant connectivity can lead to significant challenges with online harassment\, cyberbullying and a toll on mental health. In a second study conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2025\, 48% of teens said they think social media has a “mostly negative” effect on peers their age\, an increase from 32% in 2022.This workshop will: \nExamine how the connection between social media use\, peer relationships and cyberbullying impacts mental health; \nLook at the escalating impact of cyberbullying\, from online harassment to organized\, targeted aggression; \nIdentify how social media and cyberbullying contributes to anxiety\, depression\, sleep disruption\, issues with self-worth\, comparison culture and emotional overload; \nReview strategies and resources that support resilience in youth and help them to navigate their digital world more safely \nIf you are interested in registering for one of our webinars\, please contact: \nAmy Nace \nEmail: alnace@pmyf.org \nPhone: 717-367-1536\, ext. 2

SUMMARY:Are the Kids Alright? It Depends.
DESCRIPTION:Our youth are connected to each other via social media\, and those relationships are meaningful and important. However\, youth spending time with peers\, in person\, is essential to their healthy development. Just published research indicates that youth are experiencing loneliness at higher levels now\, especially with the impact of COVID. The research has shown that teenagers and young adults are lonelier than any other age group\, and a national survey found that four out of 10 young people described themselves as feeling sad\, misunderstood\, suffering from FOMO and without anyone to talk to. Youth who are lonely may be as much as three times more likely to develop depression in the future\, and the impact of loneliness on mental health can last for years. Recently published research found that a significant predictor of satisfying romantic relationships\, adult work competence and quality of life in adulthood was positive peer relationships in middle and high school. This workshop will:  \n\nExamine research addressing youth and loneliness\, peer relationships and mental health; \n\n\nLook at the importance of developing and creating peer connections; \n\n\nReview strategies and resources in the social-emotional development and healthy peer relationships among youth \n\n\nIf you are interested in registering for one of our webinars\, please contact: \nAmy Nace \nEmail: alnace@pmyf.org \nPhone: 717-367-1536\, ext. 2

SUMMARY:Emerging Trends and Future Challenges in Youth Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:The landscape of youth mental health is rapidly evolving in response to social\, technological and environmental changes. In recent years\, there has been a significant increase in the numbers of children and adolescents experiencing major depressive episodes and anxiety\, mood\, attention and behavior disorders. One in five of our youth experience mental illness\, while nearly one in three adolescents will meet the criteria for an anxiety disorder by the age of 18. This workshop will examine the latest trends\, data and research shaping the mental well-being of today’s young people. Participants will explore the factors influencing youth mental health – including social media exposure\, post-pandemic adjustment\, identity development\, academic pressures and global uncertainty – and consider how these forces intersect.  \nIf you are interested in registering for one of our webinars\, please contact: \nAmy Nace \nEmail: alnace@pmyf.org \nPhone: 717-367-1536\, ext. 2

SUMMARY:The State of Youth Mental Health: Trends\, Risks and Realities
DESCRIPTION:The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institutes of Health Youth report that the mental health of U.S. children and teens is in crisis. The crisis is fueled by increasing rates of anxiety\, depression and suicidality among adolescents with schools and agencies addressing complex emotional\, behavioral and social needs of our youth. The current data is concerning\, with 40% of high-school students reporting persistent sadness or hopelessness\, 18% having experienced major depression and 10% having attempted suicide. This workshop examines the most significant mental health trends affecting children and adolescents\, including rising rates of anxiety and depression; the impact of chronic stress\, loneliness and social isolation; and digital and social media pressures. \nPractical strategies that recognize early signs of distress\, strengthen protective factors and help build resilience will be provided\, along with a range of resources for school and agency staff. \nIf you are interested in registering for one of our webinars\, please contact: \nAmy Nace \nEmail: alnace@pmyf.org \nPhone: 717-367-1536\, ext. 2

SUMMARY:Empathy and the Teenage Brain
DESCRIPTION:Do teens lack empathy for others? Is it possible to “teach” empathy to teens? One study promoted the theory that teens don’t take the feelings of others into account because they are just incapable of doing so. Another study states that involvement in social media has decreased the levels of empathy among youth. The reality is\, the way the brain develops in adolescence affects empathy\, and there is a lot that can be done to develop empathy in teens. This workshop will: \n\nLook at the development of cognitive and affective empathy during the teen years\nExamine empathy “inside” the brain\nAddress the barriers to empathy\nDiscuss the essential steps for building empathy in school communities\nReview resources in the development of empathy.

SUMMARY:Social Media and Youth Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory addressing social media and youth mental health. With the near universal use of social media among youth ages 13 – 17\, the Advisory looks at the impact of social media on the mental health of our young people\, both positive and negative. Adolescents report that social media connects them with people who can help them through tough times and provides connections to what is going on in their friends’ lives. Some adolescents also report they feel “addicted” to social media\, and it can make them feel worse about their lives. Additionally\, research conducted by the University of Michigan indicates that children as young as 7 are involved in social media. Current trends and the impact of usage on the overall health of youth will be examined during this workshop\, along with resources and strategies to assist youth in creating safer and healthier habits in social media use.

SUMMARY:The Online Mind: How Digital Spaces Shape Youth Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:In today’s connected world\, the digital environment is a central part of youth identity\, relationships and daily life. Social media\, gaming and online communities can foster creativity and connection — but they can also lead to stress\, anxiety\, isolation and self-comparison. The digital environment can have a profound influence on the developing mind and mental health of young people. During the workshop\, we will examine current research on the psychological and relational impacts of the digital engagement\, discuss emerging trends in online behavior and review strategies and resources to better support youth navigating the pressures and possibilities of the online world.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Challenges and Social Issues of Today’s Youth
DESCRIPTION:Our youth are facing complex serious social challenges encompassing a range of issues from anxiety and depression to loneliness. Their involvement with technology and social media often amplifies those challenges. In a recent Pew Research Center survey\, 7 out of 10 teens say anxiety and depression are major problems they and their peers are facing. Other pressing concerns are substance use (particularly marijuana)\, bullying\, harassment and personal safety\, as well as loneliness and a lack of connection to others. Overshadowing all of those has been COVID-19 and the dramatic changes it has wrought on teens’ everyday lives. This workshop will: \n\nLook at the major challenges teens are facing today\nReview recent research addressing those challenges\nExamine ways to respond\, along with prevention and intervention

SUMMARY:Understanding the Cycle of Bullying\, Trauma and Toxic Stress
DESCRIPTION:The CDC cited bullying as a widespread public health issue\, referring to research that indicates bullying is common and\, in many instances\, shares a relationship with trauma\, albeit a complex one. Being bullied can significantly impact the physical\, emotional\, social\, academic and behavioral well-being of children and teens. Those who have been exposed to trauma and violence may be more likely to be bullied and engage in bullying against others. Bullying and cyberbullying and the toxic stress involved with those behaviors create obstacles to learning and have long-term mental health outcomes for both targets and aggressors\, well into their adult years. This workshop will look at the characteristics of bullying and the relationship between bullying and trauma and their shared risk and protective factors. Trauma-informed responses and strategies for addressing bullying will also be examined.

SUMMARY:This is Your Brain on Social Media
DESCRIPTION:Sexual harassment and violence perpetrated by youth is a significant and widespread public health issue. It occurs frequent in schools\, online\, and in our communities with serious\, sometimes lifelong\, physical\, mental and behavioral health consequences for victims. Peer-on-peer sexual harassment and abuse is so common in some settings that youth may regard them as normal. The dynamics\, risk factors and impact of these behaviors within both in-person and online environments will be explored. This workshop will provide resources and strategies to identify warning signs and respond effectively to incidents\, with an emphasis on prevention\, early intervention and accountability.

This workshop will examine the latest trends\, data\, and research shaping the mental well-being of today’s young people. Participants will explore the factors influencing youth mental health\, including social media exposure\, post-pandemic adjustment\, identity development\, academic pressures and global uncertainty – and consider how these forces intersect.

SUMMARY:Youth Mental Health: Risk and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The majority of our youth are emotionally healthy\, yet one in every four to five youth overall meet the criteria for a mental health disorder that places them at risk for severe impairment and/or distress. Substance abuse\, anxiety\, depression and attention deficit hyperactivity are the most commonly diagnosed disorders. There are many reasons for concern for the mental health of our youth: suicide is now the 2nd leading cause of death for teens and youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems are at an even higher risk for mental health disorders. The impact of trauma on youth and the negative impact that social media sites and apps can have on young people is also alarming. This workshop will: \n\nReview the current research addressing the mental health of youth\nLook at the signs and symptoms of behavioral health concerns\nExamine how trauma impacts learning and development\nDiscuss how to appropriately respond to youth experiencing mental health issues\nLook at resilience and education and prevention options for schools and agencies

SUMMARY:Empathy & the Teenage Brain - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Do teens lack empathy for others? Is it possible to “teach” empathy to teens? One study promoted the theory that teens are incapable of taking the feelings of others into account because they are just incapable of doing so. Another study states that involvement in social media has decreased the levels of empathy among youth. The reality is the way the brain develops in adolescence affects empathy\, and there is a lot that can be done to develop empathy in teens. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at the development of cognitive and affective empathy during the teen years \nExamine empathy “inside” the brain \nAddress the barriers to empathy \nDiscuss the essential steps for building empathy in school communities \nReview resources in the development of empathy \n\nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Are Our Kids Really Alright? Addressing Loneliness\, Relationships & Youth Mental Health - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Our youth are connected to each other via social media\, and those relationships are meaningful and important. However\, youth spending time with peers\, in person\, is essential to their healthy development. Recently published research indicates youth are experiencing loneliness at higher levels now\, especially with the impact of COVID. Surveys conducted in 2020 found teenagers and young adults are lonelier than any other age group\, and a national survey found 4 out of 10 young people described themselves as feeling sad\, misunderstood suffering from FOMO and without anyone to talk to. Youth who are lonely may be as much as three times more likely to develop depression in the future\, and the impact of loneliness on mental health can last for years. Recently published research found a significant predictor of satisfying romantic relationships\, adult work competence and quality of life in adulthood was positive peer relationships in middle and high school. This workshop will review strategies and resources in the social-emotional development and healthy peer relationships among youth.  \nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Digital Health for Youth: Addressing Mental & Physical Well-Being in the Digital World - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Youth spend a significant amount of time in the digital world\, and at increasingly younger ages. The digital world has opened doors to everything from educational opportunities\, to meeting and getting to know others\, to creating vlogs\, blogs and other creative outlets. There has also been a decline in in-person interactions with peers\, alongside a sharp rise in mental health issues. How to effectively manage this digital world is key to the mental health and emotional well-being of our youth. In additional to exploring the current research\, this workshop will:  \n\nReview research addressing youth and media diet \nLook at the mental health aspects of digital speech\, including cyberbullying\, self-harm and addiction to media \nExamine the emotional health aspects of digital speech \nReview the issues of tolerance\, decency and understanding \nDiscuss resources that can help develop the mental and physical well-being of youth in the digital world \n\nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Youth & Social Media: How Much is Too Much? - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Social media and youth are often seen as synonymous\, but that media use can negatively impact many aspects of their lives. Some of the side effects are decreased or poor academic performance\, deterioration in peer and family relationships\, behavioral problems\, physical health issues\, developmental delays and difficulty with psychosocial adjustments. In a nationally representative survey of 18 to 27-year-olds\, about half (47%) shared they wished TikTok and X did not exist. Sixty percent of those same individuals also said social media has a negative impact on society. In another project looking at the lives of the “smartphone generation\,” nearly all teens who were interviewed reported they would rather be in their parent’s generation\, without smartphones. This workshop will: \n\nLook at the algorithm pressures on youth and the links to mental health struggles and issues\nDiscuss online risks\, such as harassment\, cyberbullying and sexual solicitation\nExamine social media design and addition\nReview resources and strategies to engage with youth in discussions and lessons\n\nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.
