SUMMARY:Empathy & the Teenage Brain - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Do teens lack empathy for others? Is it possible to “teach” empathy to teens? One study promoted the theory that teens are incapable of taking the feelings of others into account because they are just incapable of doing so. Another study states that involvement in social media has decreased the levels of empathy among youth. The reality is the way the brain develops in adolescence affects empathy\, and there is a lot that can be done to develop empathy in teens. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at the development of cognitive and affective empathy during the teen years \nExamine empathy “inside” the brain \nAddress the barriers to empathy \nDiscuss the essential steps for building empathy in school communities \nReview resources in the development of empathy \n\nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Are Our Kids Really Alright? Addressing Loneliness\, Relationships & Youth Mental Health - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Our youth are connected to each other via social media\, and those relationships are meaningful and important. However\, youth spending time with peers\, in person\, is essential to their healthy development. Recently published research indicates youth are experiencing loneliness at higher levels now\, especially with the impact of COVID. Surveys conducted in 2020 found teenagers and young adults are lonelier than any other age group\, and a national survey found 4 out of 10 young people described themselves as feeling sad\, misunderstood suffering from FOMO and without anyone to talk to. Youth who are lonely may be as much as three times more likely to develop depression in the future\, and the impact of loneliness on mental health can last for years. Recently published research found a significant predictor of satisfying romantic relationships\, adult work competence and quality of life in adulthood was positive peer relationships in middle and high school. This workshop will review strategies and resources in the social-emotional development and healthy peer relationships among youth.  \nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:This is Your Brain on Social Media - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Adults spend an average of three to four hours per day on their screens\, while youth spend an average of seven. Children are getting smartphones earlier than ever – 53% of kids have their one by age 11\, and by age 12\,71% do. While devices themselves are not addictive\, the social connections they give us are powerfully compelling. Smartphones provide us the ability to maintain those connections 24/7\, but at a cost. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at the social media trends among youth \nExamine the underlying science of smartphones\, social media and the brain \nReview the current research addressing media diet \nDiscuss the impact of social media and media diet on youth health \nLook at strategies for helping youth navigate the digital life \n\nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Youth & Social Media: How Much is Too Much? - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Social media and youth are often seen as synonymous\, but that media use can negatively impact many aspects of their lives. Some of the side effects are decreased or poor academic performance\, deterioration in peer and family relationships\, behavioral problems\, physical health issues\, developmental delays and difficulty with psychosocial adjustments. In a nationally representative survey of 18 to 27-year-olds\, about half (47%) shared they wished TikTok and X did not exist. Sixty percent of those same individuals also said social media has a negative impact on society. In another project looking at the lives of the “smartphone generation\,” nearly all teens who were interviewed reported they would rather be in their parent’s generation\, without smartphones. This workshop will: \n\nLook at the algorithm pressures on youth and the links to mental health struggles and issues\nDiscuss online risks\, such as harassment\, cyberbullying and sexual solicitation\nExamine social media design and addition\nReview resources and strategies to engage with youth in discussions and lessons\n\nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Social Media & Youth Mental Health - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory addressing social media and youth mental health in May 2023. With the near universal use of social media among youth ages 13 – 17\, the Advisory looks at the impact of social media on the mental health of our young people\, both positive and negative. Adolescents report social media connects them with people who can help them through tough times and provides connections to what is going on in their friends’ lives. Some adolescents also report they feel “addicted” to social media\, and it can make them feel worse about their lives.   \nAdditionally\, research conducted by the University of Michigan indicates that children as young as age 7 are involved in social media. Current trends and impact of usage on the overall health of youth will be examined during this workshop\, along with resources and strategies to assist youth in creating safer and healthier habits in social media use.  \nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Impact of Instagram - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The pursuit of perfection via Instagram has profoundly impacted our online and real world lives\, particularly for our youth. Its visual nature places a premium on appearance – often a highly curated\, perfectly filtered one. Teens compare themselves to those filtered images of their peers and celebrities\, seeking an unattainable level of perfection. The cost of that perfection can be negative feelings about appearance and body satisfaction\, low self-esteem\, increased risk for eating disorders\, depression and other mental health issues. Instagram’s own internal researchers reported that involvement in the app led to a “teen mental health deep dive\,” worsening body image issues for 1 out of 3 teen girls. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at how Instagram and social media has influenced how youth socialize \nExamine social comparison in social media and the impact on mental health \nDiscuss strategies and review resources for healthy engagement with Instagram and social media \n\nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Trends in Substance Use in Adolescence - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Current research into the substance use and abuse of youth indicates there is both good news and bad news. In one nationwide study\, illicit drug use\, other than marijuana\, had reached the lowest levels in the past two decades. That’s the good news. The not so good news revealed an increase in usage of marijuana and a decline in the perception of risk from using a number of substances. This workshop will:  \n\nAddress the research on substance use and abuse among youth \nLook at vaping\, the substances youth are commonly consuming via vaping and perceptions of harm via vaping \nExamine emerging drug trends among youth \nDiscuss the teenage brain and addiction \n\n If you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Sexting and Sextortion: The Impact on Youth - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:This workshop addresses sexting\, sexual bullying and sextortion in digital speech and the resulting mental health issues and legal consequences. Participants will review the current research and trends focusing on youth’s involvement with technology\, sexting and sextortion. Digital speech affords our youth the ability to send images via texting and a wide variety of apps popular among them. Exactly how involved are youth in sexting and sextortion? How prevalent is sexual bullying among adolescents and pre-teens? This workshop will answer those questions and examine recommended protocols for investigation and interventions\, as well as how to effectively educate youth about sexing\, sexual bullying and sextortion. \nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Connected\, But Not … the Complicated Lives of Teens Today - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Youth are more connected than ever\, and those connections have changed how our youth connect. With a full 35% of teens preferring digital communications with their peers instead of in-person connections\, there has been a real decline in face-to-face social interactions. At the same time\, there has been a sharp rise in mental health issues among our youth. Many of our kids are lonelier\, less satisfied and less happy with their lives than ever before. How to make the way forward in our deeply connected but unconnected world is key to their health and welfare. This workshop will examine exactly how our youth connect\, as well as: \n\nThe rise in mental health issues among youth\, including major depressive disorder\, self-harm and suicide\nCurrent trends in social media and digital communication\nCommunities and inclusion in the online\, connected world\nHow we can help youth bridge the deficit of person-to-person connections and relationships\n\nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:Understanding Teen Dating Violence - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Dating violence impacts millions of teens each year\, with 1 in 3 U.S. teens experiencing physical\, sexual or emotional abuse from someone with whom they’re in a relationship. The vast majority of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue\, while only 30% of teens in an abusive relationship ever tell anyone about the abuse. That abuse can affect the development of healthy relationships as teens grow into adulthood.   \nTeen dating violence can be prevented with a focus on developing healthy relationships\, reducing risk factors and fostering protective factors. This workshop will look at the facts surrounding teen dating violence and the reduction of risk factors\, identify the protective factors and discuss the development of healthy relationships for teens.  \nIf you wish to register for a webinar\, please contact Amy Nace at alnace@pmyf.org or call 717-367-1536\, ext. 2.

SUMMARY:This is Your Brain on Social Media
DESCRIPTION:Adults spend an average of three to four hours per day on their screens\, while youth spend an average of seven. Children are getting smartphones earlier than ever  ̶  53% of kids have one by age 11\, and 71% by age 12. While devices themselves are not addictive\, the social connections they give us are powerfully compelling. Smartphones provide us the ability to maintain those connections 24/7\, but at a cost. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at the social media trends among youth \n\n\nExamine the underlying science of smartphones\, social media and the brain \n\n\nReview the current research addressing media diet \n\n\nDiscuss the impact of social media and media diet on youth health \n\n\nLook at strategies for helping youth navigate the digital life. \n\n

SUMMARY:Moving From Trauma Sensitive to Trauma Informed Agencies and Schools
DESCRIPTION:We know that at least one in four school-aged children have been exposed to a traumatic event that impacts learning and behavior. Using a trauma-informed approach with youth recognizes how prevalent trauma is and the many ways that trauma can manifest. Working with youth within a trauma-informed framework endeavors to avoid re-traumatization while focusing on strengths and developing resilience. This workshop will:  \n\nLook at trauma\, adverse childhood experiences and how experiencing trauma in childhood is different than trauma experienced at other times in life \n\n\nExamine the impact of trauma on brain development  \n\n\nReview how to provide trauma-informed services in schools utilizing resources from the PA Department of Education.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Cycle of Bullying and Trauma
DESCRIPTION:The CDC cited bullying as a widespread public health issue\, referring to research that indicates bullying is common\, and in many instances\, shares a relationship with trauma\, albeit a complex one. Being bullied can significantly impact the physical\, emotional\, social\, academic and behavioral well-being of children and teens. Those who have been exposed to trauma and violence may be more likely to be bullied and engage in bullying against others. Bullying and cyberbullying and the toxic stress involved with those behaviors create obstacles to learning and have long-term mental health outcomes for both targets and aggressors\, well into their adult years.   \nThis workshop will look at the characteristics of bullying and the relationship between bullying and trauma. We will also examine the shared risk and protective factors between bullying and trauma\, along with trauma-informed responses and strategies for addressing bullying.

SUMMARY:Bullying\, Trauma and the Brain
DESCRIPTION:Research focused on bullying and cyberbullying among children and teens has found that the toxic stress from bullying victimization has a direct impact on the developing brain. Being targeted for bullying\, particularly long-term bullying\, impacts specific regions of the brain\, leading to chronic emotional stress\, compromised mental health and physical and social dysfunction. Researchers believe that youth who exhibit symptoms of depression and PTSD from bullying may actually be showing symptoms of neurophysiological changes. This workshop will:   \n\nLook at the long-term research addressing the impact of bullying on the developing brain \n\n\nExamine bullying as a traumatic stressor impacting brain health \n\n\nDiscuss the impact of bullying victimization among children\, teens and adults on their health and well-being \n\n\nReview effective strategies and resources to address bullying and cyberbullying.

SUMMARY:Addressing the Crisis of Youth Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:In December 2021\, the U.S. Surgeon General\, Dr. Vivek Murthy\, issued\, “A Surgeon General’s Advisory on Protecting Youth Mental Health.” The Advisory brought attention to the significant mental health issues experienced by our youth\, further impacted by the pandemic. In 2019\, 16% of youth ages 12 – 17 reported experiencing a major depressive episode in the past year\, double since 2009. From March to October of 2020\, visits to the emergency room by youth for mental health issues increased 31% for 12 – 17 years old and 24% for children 5 – 11 years old\, compared to 2019. \nThis workshop will look at factors that shape youth mental health\, current trends and challenges and actionable steps we can all take to address and prioritize the very real needs of our youth.
